EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW
Using RecPak
How should I use RecPak?
RecPak is designed to fuel you for the long haul in any environment. While it is formulated as a meal replacement, it is also meant to complement whole food. The spout is resealable so you can consume RecPak only as quickly as you need to. You may find that after a long day, it's best to drink a whole serving in order to recover from the day's activity and fuel your body for the next. On the other hand, during activity, you will likely want to consume one serving every 2-4 hours in order to provide sustaining nutrition without causing your body to devote too much energy to digestion.
What is RecPak’s shelf life?
Our recommended use-by date is 18 months from production.
How long after I add water is RecPak good for?
RecPak’s freshness after mixing really depends on the temperature. If in a cold weather environment (or a fridge), it's been tested and used for up to five days. In moderate temperature, it’s generally good for 1-2 days after. While in hot temperatures, use it that day.
What are RecPak’s allergens?
RecPak contains milk and coconut. We know that a lot of folks out there who would love RecPak have certain dietary restrictions and preferences. So while our current product lineup might not be for you, please keep us in mind, as we are prioritizing development on a plant based option.
How easy is it to fill water through the spout?
Very easy! Although it looks like a small spout, with a steady hand filling RecPak with water is easy and fast.
Nutrition
Is RecPak gluten free?
RecPak does not use any ingredients that inherently contain gluten such as rye, wheat or barley. While protocols are in place to avoid gluten contamination, RecPak’s products are not tested for gluten content and are not certified gluten free.
What do you mean by "Complete Meal” or “Complete Nutrition”?
RecPak contains an macronutritional ratio of roughly 50% carbs, 25% proteins, and 25% fats, and 25% of your daily value of most vitamins and minerals. Our ingredients provide a diverse source of fast and slow absorbing carbs to provide help fuel performance and maintain glycogen levels, high quality proteins to mitigate muscle breakdown, and a good balance of monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) from sunflower oil, polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) from flax, and saturated fats, specifically medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) from coconut oil. We consider RecPak to be "complete" because it contains all 39 essential nutrients. RecPak is designed to provide you the energy and nutrition that you need while in environments where both are hard to come by.
Why 700 calories?
Mountaineers, hikers, military personnel, and adventure athletes have very high daily caloric expenditures - often an average of over 4,000 calories per day. Energy expenditure can even reach 365-750 calories per hour, inducing significant energy deficits and potential muscle catabolism (i.e. break down).
700 calories is about 15-25% of your likely total daily caloric expenditure, depending on your physical size and activity level. When you're on the move, the body can only process a few hundred calories per hour to keep energy levels constant and not overload the stomach. RecPak contains a lot more calories than quick snacks like energy bars, but has a similar number as freeze dried meals, so it's the right amount to keep you fueled without weighing you down.
Why does RecPak have added sugars?
Most of us like sweets, but these added sugars are about performance. During demanding activities like mountaineering or climbing, carbohydrate sources such as sugar can be rapidly absorbed and are necessary to fuel the body and keep glycogen levels up. Without fast absorbing high glycemic carbs, you’ll “bonk” prematurely. These sugars are also buffered by RecPak’s large proportions of complex carbohydrates, proteins, and fats, so when used during your performance activity, it’s pretty much impossible to get a “sugar high” from drinking it.
Is RecPak vegan?
RecPak is not vegan. Very few plant protein sources are considered a complete protein. The most prominent protein in RecPak is whey, which is the most bioavailable protein and is a good source of leucine, which has a potential role in muscle protein synthesis. However, we understand a lot of folks have different nutritional requirements, so we’d love to develop a plant based option. Stay tuned!
